The Category One greyhound racing competitions continue this summer with the Sussex Cup, a three-round competition 48-dog competition contested over the 515m trip at Hove. We have two selections for the competition at the Brighton track, both at different ends of the betting spectrum with one of the selections available at 100/1 whilst the other is amongst the favourites at 8/1 with Paddy Power and is considered the best of our free greyhound racing betting tips for the Sussex Cup.

The 515m trip at Hove is a fantastic distance for greyhound racing as the early paced type greyhounds are still successful but it also allows the stronger running types to be more competitive than they perhaps would be over the shorter four-bend distances elsewhere in the country.

The first round of the Sussex Cup takes place on Thursday the 25th of July, with the semi-finals and final taking place on the 1st and 7th of August respectively.

Our main free greyhound racing betting tip for the Sussex Cup comes in the shape of the extremely lightly-raced Express Master who is available to be backed at a best price of 8/1 with Paddy Power.

Express Master has raced three times at Hove in July, with his only other appearance coming in April in Ireland. Those four races, combined with some nice trial work at Monmore, leave me thinking we could have an fantastically fast dog on our hands in Express Master.

Express Master certainly falls into the early-paced category with sectionals of 4:19s, 4:04s and 4:10s in his three Hove races to date with the latter two of those times fast enough to lead almost every race around the 515m.

Having excellent early pace is one thing but the winner of the Sussex Cup needs to be able to see out the 515m in strong style and the belief is that Express Master can do so. In his last race, one of the other competition favourites, Bridge Honcho, went past Master after early trouble but Express Master was able to close on Honcho, and in the end was beaten by the shortest of heads.

A quick look at his sole race in Ireland also backs up the suggestion that he runs on strongly and the Chris Allsopp trained dog is certainly open to improvement with more races.

Not only does Express Master have the sectional split times to be extremely competitive he also has excellent race times this month with a 29:60s race really standing out as one of the fastest times around Hove this year. There aren’t many dogs in the competition that can go that much under 30 seconds, nevermind get competitive with that kind of time.

We can find negatives with most of the other market principals: Glenpadden Post (6/1) and Bridge Honcho (7/1) are too unreliable to back in a multi-round competition, whilst Teejays Bluehawk (7/1) is a fantastic dog but often leaves itself too much to do in races and doesn’t have a good enough strike rate to back when we are looking for a greyhound who can win races.

Express Master reminds me of Pinpoint Maxi who recently won the Classic at Sunderland in the sense when coming in lightly raced but with known early pace and fast times. We didn’t back Maxi on that occasion but we should certainly back Express Master at the 8/1 with Paddy Power.

Whilst we are really strong on Express Master, we are being a touch more speculative with our second free greyhound racing tip for the Sussex Cup as we suggest an each-way bet on the Perry Barr racer, Highfire Jazz, who is a best price 100/1 with William Hill.

This is a big step up in class for Highfire Jazz but I think the 515m Hove distance could be a good fit with the greyhound. Highfire Jazz typically starts slow but has on occasion shown early pace, whilst he runs on well over Perry Barr’s 480m distance and, to show the strength of the greyhound, he has the fastest time of the year over their 660m distance.

The big positive is that he wins races, over both 4 and 6 bends, with the recent highlight being a come from behind victory over Frankbrunosbro over 480m, with Frankbrunosbro having the best time over that distance this year.

I may have used the word speculative to describe the bet but there are certainly worse 100/1 bets to have and other bookmakers have Highfire Jazz as low as 50/1.
