The Greyhound Derby 2014 begins on the 1st of May and runs throughout the month, with the final on the 31st. 212 greyhounds line up in the first round, spread over three days, and we’ve already looked at the greyhounds at the head of the market, but now we’re offering up some other greyhounds available at bigger prices. In this article, we outline 100/1 and 125/1 free greyhound racing betting tips for the Greyhound Derby, with Paddy Power offering the standout price on the 100/1 chance.

Lough Messi @ 100/1 Paddy Power

Lough Messi comes into the Derby fresh off his success in the Golden Sprint at Romford and is sure to have amongst the best early pace in this year’s Derby. Romford greyhounds don’t typically perform excellently at Wimbledon but Lough Messi looks to see out the longer distance well.

This year at Romford, Lough Messi has led every race, showing early pace (c. 3:60s sectionals) and securing the victories in excellent times. In his trial at Wimbledon he carded a fantastic sectional of 4:69s and there is no reason to believe that he can’t repeat that consistently like he has done at Romford. If he does, he can lead almost every possible race line-up and although there will be strong greyhounds chasing him he should be good to qualify through the rounds if he continues to clock similar times to his 28:46s trial.

Generally a 66/1 chance, the 100/1 available at Paddy Power is the stand-out price for Lough Messi and he looks worth a bet.

Candlelight King @ 125/1 bet365

Candlelight King is a proven Sheffield performer over their 500m trip and the belief is that he has the attributes that can translate well to a successful Derby campaign.

He has been one of the top performers at his home track for over a year, showing consistent early pace (without being fantastic) and dipping well under the 29 seconds at Sheffield – which is a good standard.

The positives are that, although he leads a lot of races, even when he doesn’t he is a strong enough runner to be competitive in races and is rarely seen out of the frame. His experience over slightly longer than the Derby trip will prove valuable and his trial work has been reasonable.

Candlelight King could be a big player at the prices, he’s 125/1 with bet365 but as short as 50/1 elsewhere. Betfair users can take advantage of the 170 available there.
