The Derby Plate begins on Saturday the 24th of May and is a ‘consolation’ competition for greyhounds who exited the Greyhound Derby in the three opening rounds – the competition gives them a chance to earn a spot in a high profile race on Derby final night. There are 18 greyhounds entered with the top two from each semi-final progressing to the final on the 31st of May. We’ve 3 free greyhound racing betting tips for the competition, with Ladbrokes offering 16/1 about our strongest fancy.

The Plate is ultra competitive and the first thing that strikes when you look at the market is that there are of course question marks about all of the greyhounds in the competition but particularly a number of the greyhounds at the head of the market given their prices. We’ll briefly highlight some of those doubts and give 3 alternative options to back in the ante-post market.

Southern Mesut tops most ante-post markets but 100% has to lead his races or he stands no chance and he didn’t come away in the 2nd round of the Derby after being picked up in the opening round. Also, even if he leads he is more than vulnerable to being picked up and the 480m looks a touch too far – therefore we couldn’t be confident that he can ping and win two races in a row and at 6/1 we’ll pass on the Lister dog. Bittles Bar joins Mesut at the top of the market but even a solid Monmore win two weeks ago isn’t enough to convince us that he is back to the form that saw him reach the 2013 Derby final.

In behind those two in the market are Mileheight Alba, who really seems to need traps 1 or 2 but has 3 in his heat, and Airfield Paudie, who could be something but exited Derby in the opening round and seems priced at 7/1 based on two subsequent trials.

There are some nicely priced alternatives to the market leaders and our first is Borneo who is 14/1 for the competition with bet365. He is trained by Peter Cronin, the trainer of Crokers Champ who is going well in the Derby and you would imagine that the two dogs will have been trained side-by-side and thus Borneo should be in good form.

Borneo was highly thought of coming into the Derby, he then flew round in a trial in 28:16s (+30) and showed up well to win his first round heat in the Derby before exiting in the 2nd round when finding lots of trouble. The belief is that he could be a top greyhound and with a reasonable looking draw in his heat should make the final where if he is the class we expect then he could go very close.

There isn’t really many unknowns with Islas Scolari but he is a quality greyhound who is often underrated but he is in great form and can put up a big showing at 16/1 with Ladbrokes.

Scolari went well in the Arc and then won his opening round race in the Derby before finding misfortune and only just missing out on qualification in the second round. Since then he has won a good race at Hove and the dog has been finding better breaks of late which have been putting him into contention in his races much earlier than usual and his strong late runs have seen him win races. That kind of style, coupled with the fact he is a wide seed can see him be a contender in this competition – look for him to upset Southern Mesut in his heat.

The last of our free greyhound racing betting tips for the Derby Plate is Jaytee Seville who can be backed at 20/1 with bet365. His 28:17s trial pre-Derby coupled with his picking up of Ballymac Vic in the opening round simply cannot be ignored and whilst he often gives himself quite a bit to do in his races with sluggish starts it would be silly not to take a small stakes each-way chance on the greyhound at the prices available.
