Recently we’ve seen a lot of action in noteworthy four bend greyhound competitions but the focus in the upcoming months looks set to be on the UK stayers scene with the St. Leger, the TV Trophy and the Champion Stakes all set to take place over staying or marathon distances. The Coral Champion Stakes, beginning on the 2nd of August, is contested over the 575m distance at Romford and the competition has attracted a tremendous field of 36 greyhounds all battling for the £10,000 first prize.

We’ve taken a look at all the greyhounds and have produced two free greyhound racing betting tips for the Champion Stakes, priced at 12/1 and 16/1, and both can be backed at their best price at Ladbrokes.

In 2012, Blonde Reagan was the top staying greyhound in the whole country, winning countless races in great fashion and ending the year in style by winning the St. Leger as well as capturing the TV Trophy.

The early part of 2013 wasn’t so productive for the Blonde Reagan camp but he has shown improvements in recent times that would suggest he has been targeted for this competition and for another crack at the St.Leger and/or the TV Trophy – that make him BetPal’s best bet for the Champion Stakes at a price of 16/1 with Ladbrokes.

Blonde Reagan’s style, despite the longer distances, is to crack out in the hope of making all in his races and he should have amongst the best early pace in the competition. Getting an early lead is essential for Reagan and once he hits the front he takes some pegging back as he exceptionally strong with victories on his record all the way up to the 835m at Monmore.

Being a wide seed is also a benefit in this competition as of the 36 greyhounds, only 5 are wide seeds so we are likely to be drawn well if we progress to the semi-finals and final whilst the same cannot be said for the unseeded or middle seeded greyhounds.

Recent and past Romford form also boosts Blonde Reagan’s chances in the competition. His most recent 575m race didn’t go to plan with a third place finish behind Cavan Dancer but prior to that he flew round in 35:41s, one of the fastest recent times at Romford and a time he has replicated in the past.

He has also been going very fast when trialling over their 400m distance recently which boosts the belief he can lead his races and he even went fast in a sprint trial only a few days ago.

Blonde Reagan really stands out as a good bet in the Champion Stakes if we believe he is back to anything like his best form, which we do, and the 16/1 with Ladbrokes should be taken. Each-way backers can enjoy terms of quarter odds for the first 4 in the final.

The second of our free greyhound racing tips for the Champion Stakes sees us side with the favourite for the competition but Airport Captain can still be backed at a big 12/1 with Ladbrokes, whilst he is as short as 8/1 elsewhere.

The reasoning for backing Airport Captain is relatively straight forward: he is very, very fast and is in excellent form having won the Henlow Gold Cup over 550m last month, breaking the track record in the process.

In his first look at Romford last week he missed the break and found trouble at the first bend but the expectation is that he will come on for that look and hopefully produce his Gold Cup form which saw him show great early pace and staying power. The 575m shouldn’t be an issue.

The 8/1 on offer at some bookmakers is surely closer to the right price for Airport Captain as if he settles at Romford he can go very fast round there meaning the 12/1 with Ladbrokes is an excellent price for him to win the Champion Stakes.
