Whilst the majority of the money on the Greyhound Derby 2014 will be placed in the outright markets there are a number of current special markets and sub-markets available to wager on at the moment. Below we highlight a selection of the offers and give our views on the prices.
Charlie Lister Greyhound To Make The Final – William Hill – 6/4
Lister is renowned as the Derby King with 7 previous victories, including Sidaz Jack in 2013. This year he brings Sidaz Jack, Southern Mesut and Jordans Brianna, amongst others. Whilst his line-up doesn’t look particularly strong this year it is hard to argue with the statistics and Lister has had at least one finalist in each of the last 6 finals. He knows what he’s doing. You can also find 8/1 about Lister being the winning trainer.
Derby Winner To Go Unbeaten – William Hill – 8/1
This looks too difficult. The standard of the competition is fantastic and a lot of the entrants won’t be coming in fully fit as the trainers like them to peak later in the competition.
Greyhound To Reach Final Without Winning a Heat – William Hill – Evens
The sponsors again offer an interesting market but this looks a tough one to land. All of last year’s finalists had won a heat. They offer 40/1 that a greyhound reaches the final without winning a heat but then wins the final.
Razldazl Jayfkay sets the standard here, with a 28:08s time during the 2012 Derby. It looks a tough ask but if the track is fast then who knows what can happen. Sidarian Blaze clocked 28:15s in a trial stake and Johnny Kwango ripped round in 28:12s in a trial so there is a chance the clock can go. Still, I’d make ‘No’ a big favourite here.
Greyhound To Break 28 seconds – Yes 5/2 William Hill
It would take a monumental effort for a greyhound to not only break the track record of 28:08s but to dip under it by more than a length. This can’t be a good bet at the prices, with Boyles offering the 2/1 (above) that the track record goes.
