After a fantastic opening round of 26 heats last weekend, the Greyhound Derby 2013 field is reduced to 96 runners, with the 2nd round featuring 16 heats of 6 dogs. From here on in, only 3 dogs will qualify from each race until we are down to the final 6 who will form the final of the Derby. Eight of the second round heats take place on Friday, the day we are focusing on in this article, with the remaining 8 heats, the next day, on the Saturday.
We are in the business of picking winners and after a successful opening round we are back with a number of greyhound betting tips for the Friday’s 2nd round of the Greyhound Derby including our bet of the night at 11/8 with Paddy Power for a dog who is plotted up and likely to go off odds-on on the night.
Sidaz Jack runs in Heat Two at 8:10pm on Friday and looks the bet of the night to us at the available 11/8 with Paddy Power. We can expect a big improvement from his first round performance when he was drawn poorly in trap 4 and took a number of bumps on his way to qualifying.
In the 2nd round, Sidaz Jack is drawn in trap one and it looks like he is plotted up to go well and should thrive on that draw. Traps 2, 3 and 4 are devoid of early pace meaning Jack will get a lovely solo on the rails whilst both traps 5 and 6 have a good early dash but are not in the same class as Jack.
Clockings of 28:85s and 28:88s in recent trials around Wimbledon would likely be good enough to win but the general feeling is that Sidaz Jack can go faster and the 11/8 is good value.
South Armagh was eye catching in his first round heat last Friday where he showed excellent early before only just succumbing to the all round pace of the classy Jaytee Hellcat at the line.
In the 2nd round, South Armagh will not have anything as good as Hellcat chasing it down in Heat 4 at 8:42pm and is given the perfect opportunity to break clear from trap 6 early and make all in impressive fashion.
Garryglass Rodge is one of the tightest railers in training and has been drawn in trap 4 so that is a sure-fire recipe for trouble at the first bend, that should put dents in the hopes of all the railers whilst South Armagh looks the fastest of the two wide seeds.
South Armagh should be backed at the 2/1 with bet365. He may get shorter before the off but he did go the other way we would benefit from bet365′s ‘Best Odds Guaranteed’.
In Heat 5 at 8:58pm, we are given the opportunity to back the fastest dog from the 1st round, Laughil George, at an inflated stand-out price of 9/4 with Paddy Power.
The price is available due to the presence of Kereight King in trap 1 who is right up at the head of the market and looked impressive in the opening round.
However, we cannot ignore the fact that they both had clear runs in the opening round yet George recorded a time almost 3 lengths faster than King.
Kereight King will need to be at his best early to avoid Bonamassa Rocks and this coupled with the fact that Laughil George might still be quick enough to win even if turning 2nd to King off the first bend makes Laughil George a very exciting bet.
Our final bet of the night, comes in the final heat, Heat 8, at 9:48pm, and comes in the shape of a dog we have dismissed a number of times due to his quirky tendencies but is at the right price to back on Friday irrespective.
Longwood Warrior takes on one of the competition favourites in the shape of Droopys Jet and we think he is a bet at 5/1 with bet365 as he is taken to vastly improve on his 1st round performance and lead from the start to the finish.
Droopys Jet is drawn in trap 3 and didn’t break too well from there in last year’s Derby.
