This weekend sees the return of the football season proper and with it, the return of our recommended football accumulator tips. But while all eyes are on the Premier League big boys, there’s plenty of value to be found in the lower leagues, and we’ve picked out a few teams that look like bankers for your weekend football accumulator bets.
1 – Portsmouth vs Bournemouth
We’ll kick off this weekend’s recommended football accumulator bet with an obvious one. Portsmouth’s troubles have been well documented and they were soundly beaten in the League Cup by Plymouth in midweek, having fielded nine players aged 18 or under – seven of them had never even played a senior match before.
Even if Pompey can bring a few bodies in before Saturday, they’re unlikely to have forged any kind of understanding and Bournemouth, who were a tough prospect on the road last season and have strengthened well in the summer, look like good things at a best price of 1.67 with Coral. They are a must for all football accumulators this weekend.
2 – MK Dons vs Oldham Athletic
Milton Keynes Dons are many people’s favourites for the League One title this season, and it’s easy to see why. Having lost out to eventual Play-Off winners Huddersfield, Karl Robinson has kept his squad together, including the experienced Alan Smith who has now signed for the club permanently, as well as having added three experience players from teams promoted to the Championship last term.
Oldham on the other hand, are more likely to find themselves nearer the wrong end of the table and a trip to Stadium MK on the opening day of the season is a tough ask. Their best price of 6.12 (Pinnacle) tells its own story, while the 1.73 on offer at Coral about MK Dons looks very generous indeed and must be a strong candidate for most people’s football accumulator bets this weekend.
3 – Rotherham United vs Burton Albion
New Rotherham manager Steve Evans set about overhauling his squad and is doing a fine job, with the Millers looking set for an automatic promotion campaign. The talent was already there under the previous manager Andy Scott, though they were badly underperforming, but you can expect Evans to change that. The signing of Nicky Hunt looks to be a masterstroke, while the addition of Daniel Nardiello, Kayode Odejayi and Kieran Agard means plenty of options – and goals – up front.
Burton were fortunate to put Sheffield United out of the League Cup in midweek, thanks mostly to the Blades wasting a myriad of chances and being sloppy at the back, and they will do well to still be in the Football League come May. The best price of 1.67 about Rotherham (Coral) looks positively huge and simply has to go into your football accumulator this weekend.
The best place to strike this particular football accumulator bet is clearly Coral, as they are currently best priced about all three of our tips. The treble pays 4.82 – a little under 5/1 – and £20 would return a juicy £96.50.
Football Accumulator Tip – Saturday August 18th 2012
Portsmouth vs Bournemouth @ 1.67
MK Dons vs Oldham Athletic @ 1.73
Rotherham United vs Burton Albion @ 1.67
Accumulator Odds: 4.82 (3.82/1)
£20 returns: £96.50
Portsmouth have signed ten professionals on month long deals since this piece was published and as such, their price has shortened and Bournemouth’s has increased greatly, to a best price of 1.91 (Coral, William Hill). However, most of these free agents won’t have had a proper pre-season and there is bound to be a lack of understanding, so I wouldn’t be too worried. We simply have better odds for our tip!
