Five Pool winners and the three runners up with the best pool records make it through the group stages and competition for those spots, especially the runners up places, is huge with two rounds of pool games to be played over the next two weekends.

Here are views on three key games this weekend:

Pool 4 Munster v Stade Francais

Last weekend Munster capitulated in Paris losing 27-7 against 14 men. This was their third successive defeat which ended their hopes of qualification for the quarter-finals. Stade meanwhile sit second in the group behind leaders Leicester and victory this weekend is crucial to their hopes of obtaining a second place spot.

Traditionally Munster is one of the toughest venues for an away side in European competition to go to and win, but this Munster team is a shadow of its strongest sides from the 1980s and 90s. Interestingly Munster are priced up as favourites for this game, no doubt on that supposed home advantage, despite their form. Stade Francais at 21/20 with Bet Victor looks a great bet

Pool 1 Saracens v Ulster

Saracens have the best record of any team in this year’s ERCC two thirds of the way through the pool stages, unbeaten with 19 points whilst Ulster have won three out of four games, sitting second in the group with 13 points. In the reverse fixture at the beginning of the competition Saracens won in Belfast 27-9 and should win here on their route to a quarter-final seeding. Certainly one of the strongest teams in this year’s competition, Saracens are 12 point favourites on the handicap with Sportingbet at Evens

Pool 5 Toulon v Wasps

Three time defending champions Toulon suffered a very surprising reverse early in this year’s competition losing 32-6 to Wasps at a time when many of their new overseas recruits had not arrived, straight after the rugby world cup. Since then Toulon’s form has improved and here they defend an unbeaten home record.

In terms of the pool position Wasps lead Toulon with 14 points to 12, three wins and a loss each. With Toulon at full strength at home this is their great chance to win, go top and take control of their group in their attempt to win the competition for a fourth year in a row.

Toulon are 11 point handicap favourites at 10/11 with Sportingbet. With the weather forecast for the south of France dry for the weekend, this sees the prospect of a game with tries and points and Toulon covering the handicap.
