The Europa League is under way again, and we have another betting tip in the FC Astana v Botev Plovdiv tie. The visitors from Bulgaria qualified for the competition by virtue of CSKA being denied a UEFA licence to compete, and travel to Kazakhstan as underdogs. Will that assessment be proved correct?

The qualifying rounds of the Europa League are almost impenetrable to the uninitiated, and the only real tool to try to compare sides from different nations is the UEFA Coefficient rankings. These statistics, based on performance over the previous five years, have proved reasonably accurate in campaigns gone past and this match is one where they look worth siding with. Kazakhstan rank over six points worse off than Bulgaria, so Botev will have the edge in quality – but it is also worth noting that FC Astana won their national cup in order to qualify for the Europa League, and finished fifth in the table, so they may not live up to the coefficient rating at all. Botev Plovdiv finished fourth in Bulgaria, but were beaten just four times on the road (from fifteen) throughout that campaign and were mixing company with the likes Levski Sofia and CSKA Sofia. They boast a greater pedigree than FC Astana and favouritism for the hosts is debatable. Certainly the odds on an away win look too big.
