Entries for the English Greyhound Derby 2013 close on the 22nd of May at which point we will know the confirmed field for the Wimbledon competition but in the mean time we are taking a chance on a class dog at a big price which we hope will run. The first round of the World’s greatest greyhound competition takes place on Friday the 31st of May and Saturday the 1st of June.

Bridge Honcho is available to back at 100/1 with Stan James whilst most others go 66/1 and he is our next ante-post betting tip to win the Greyhound Derby.

Honcho hasn’t ran a competitive race since December 2012 but has returned recently to trial around Coventry and it those trial results that have led to us taking a chance on the dog entering the competition.

The dog’s first trial back was a sprint and it recorded a time of 15:79s, a very sharp time which is amongst the fastest times of the year round their 263m trip but the real stand out result came in Bridge Honcho’s second trial on May the 12th around the Coventry 485m track.

On that occasion, Bridge Honcho stormed round in 28:84s which is faster than the track record of 28:99s set by Farloe Warhawk earlier in the month. If those trial performances translate to the races then we can have a very big player on our hands.

Bridge Honcho, trained by the excellent Mark Wallis, is a dog with very good early pace which is always a bonus in a greyhound race. However, one of the negatives against the dog is its tendency to miss the break but to balance that negative he has shown in his career thus far that he can recover from poor starts to be competitive.

Last year, Honcho was mixing it up with the best dogs around, including Ballymac Eske, and was tipped as one of the big dogs for 2013 until injury put paid to that for the early part of the year. Hopefully he can show his class for the rest of the year, starting with an entry into the English Greyhound Derby.

He has definitely been getting backed, a few days ago you could have backed Bridge Honcho at 150/1 with bet365 and William Hill but he is now is 66/1 and 80/1 in those places respectively. Stan James remained unchanged at their 100/1.
