Headingley, Friday 25th August

In the first test of the three match series, England recorded their third biggest win over the West Indies, by an innings and 209 runs. They won in three days, and took 19 wickets on the third day.

The West Indies were simply outclassed and apart from one spell of bowling. with the new ball by Kemar Roach and one innings of79 by Jerome Blackwood few players looked test class.

For England Cook scored 200,Root a 100 and Anderson and Broad continued their long term bowling partnership with much success. An unchanged team is likely for Leeds on Friday. There are still issues at the top of the batting order, with Stoneman and Westley looking for a score to cement places in the line up but with world class batsmen in Cook and Root, a strong middle order with several all-rounders balancing the team and strong fast bowling they are a class above their visitors here.

The West Indies cricket malaise is long term and borne not only of poor depth of talent but by mismanagement of the gae in the region. This touring squad is missing up to 15 players, whose disaffection began in a dispute with the cricket board overmoney and they now either ply their trade in T20 leagues or have simply made themselves unavailable for test cricket

It is all very well having a transitional period from one set of established players to another, all sides have those, but to do it with no senior players at all is a step too far

The result here was a crushing victory for England.

Leeds this Friday and is a quick turn-around from the first game and it is difficult to see why the outcome should be any different in the absence of bad weather. It is a traditional red ball day-time test

Outright odds for the match with Bet365 are:

England 1/8
West Indies 20/1
Draw 7/1

Not much to go at there, with an expectation of another England win.

In the top England batsman market two of the top four batsmen are inexperienced and the top scorer should come from the top of the order given the weakness of the West Indian attack. That essentially means Cook and Root.

Prices here are 11/4 each of two with Bet365. A strong case can be made for either but Root at 11/4 appeals the most.
