England, world cup semi finalists with a young team have dropped from Southgate’s Gary Cahill and Jamie Vardy, who have both stepped back from international football to focus on their club careers, as well as Ashley Young, the Manchester United full-back.

Young has been replaced by United team-mate Shaw, who last played for England in March 2017, winning his seventh cap in a defeat to Germany.

Joe Gomez has also returned to the fold after missing the finals through injury, while Adam Lallana, the midfielder, and centre-back James Tarkowski are named in the selection having been on the standby list for Russia.

Spain have dropped Barcelona’s Jordi Alba dropped from their squad ahead of the Nations League fixtures against England and Croatia. The 29-year-old left-back, who has 66 international caps, joins Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke and Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas in being omitted from Luis Enrique’s first 24-man squad. Iniesta has retired

Enrique took up the role of Spain manager in July after a poor World Cup campaign – led by Fernando Hierro after Julen Lopetegui was sacked on the eve of the tournament – which saw the team crash out to hosts Russia in the last 16.
