The Lords Test match had it all, 1600+ runs, 40 wickets and a final session win. England and New Zealand play the second test at Headingley starting on Friday

In the attacking intent, speed of scoring and overall approach the Lords Test which finished in an England win late on Monday afternoon showed more than ever that one day thinking is entering into Test Cricket more and more. In part this is to be expected of an aggressive captain like Brendon McCullum, whose team kept attacking with bat and ball long after other teams would have played more defensively, but also the approach of Ben Stokes who counter-attacked in the first innings, scored quickly in the second and took key wickets on the final afternoon to both set up and then confirm a memorable comeback victory.

All that said, New Zealand with key players just arrived in the country, looked a bit under-cooked for the game and are likely to be tuned up for the second test match at Headingley starting on Friday.

In recent years the Headingley wicket has played well, and been high scoring. the team that wins the toss is likely to bat. Fresh off Lords England have been installed as 5/4 favourites, New Zealand 5/2 and the draw 12/5. The first thing to say is that the Draw odds are probably too short. The attacking intent of the visitors is such that the game is unlikely to fizzle out.

Essentially these are two evenly matched teams, the question is whether the 12/5 offered about New Zealand is sufficient to tempt us. I think it probably is. Winning the toss would help but the combined talents of Guptill, Williamson, Taylor and McCullum with the bat and Boult and Southee with the ball give New Zealand a chance to draw the series. They after all scored 523 first up at Lords and used the new ball effectively reducing England to 30-4.
