After the conclusion of the Ashes Test series there is a one-off T20 international ahead of a 5 match ODI series. This will be played in Cardiff on Monday 31st August.

England’s squad is similar to that that played the series against New Zealand in the first part fo the summer except that key batsman Joe Root is rested. Moeen Ali, Jos Buttler, Steve Finn and Ben Stokes are those players in the squad that featured in the Ashes

The English selectors said “This is primarily a young group of players and the next three weeks will provide them with valuable experience as we continue to identify players who can take our limited overs cricket forward over the next four years.”

Amongst those young players are left arm pace bowler Reece topley and batsman James Vince, who were in the squad for the last T20 international against New Zealand but did not play in the 56-run win at Old Trafford. Fit-again seamer Chris Woakes will return after an injury lay-off.

Topley has taken 16 wickets at an average of 22.93 with an economy rate of 9.02 in 11 T20 Blast games for Essex this season, while Hampshire’s Vince is the joint highest English run-scorer in the competition with 641.

The Australian squad of 15 players is captained by Steve smith and features renowned T20 talents in David Warner, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell but also has an eye on youth with the inclusion of Ashton Agar, Cameron Boyce, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Joe Burns.

Outright prices for this one-off game have Australia 4/6 and England 6/5 both with William Hill. Understandably Australia are favourites with a much better record in the format and match-winning potential from their senior players.

This though is a difficult format as it is a short game with randomising factors such as the English weather that can make winning the toss important. In addition the host venue Glamorgan have suspended head grounds-man Keith Exton ahead of  the game.

Exton was put on ‘gardening leave’ after the Welsh county’s Royal London One-Day Cup game with Hampshire was abandoned because the wicket was deemed too dangerous to continue. An England and Wales Cricket Board panel subsequently docked Glamorgan two points and fined them £9,000, plus ordered a payment of £4,000 be made to Hampshire to compensate the county’s travelling fans.

So, with uncertainty about the weather and the pitch, instinctively I want to support the underdog here as a value price if they get the better of the playing conditions

In terms of sub-markets for the game:

All prices are from Coral

Top English batsman

Hales and Roy are a destructive opening pair and are favourites with Hales (3./1)favoured of the two because Roy’s (7/2) technique has yet to adequately develop for International cricket. The middle order should consist of Morgan (4/1), Moeen (5/1), Stokes (5/1), Buttler (10/1) and Billings (10/1). If conditions do favour the bowlers then early wickets are always a possibility so the prices on the likes of Buttler and Billings could be very attractive if the game is low scoring

Top England Bowler

For the likely bowling line up prices are as follows:

Finn 3/1

Stokes 7/2

Woakes 7/2

Ali 7/2

Rashid 4/1

Willey 4/1

With six front line bowlers not all are guaranteed to bowl their full complement of overs but the death bowlers are likely to be Finn and Willey, who I consider the value price for top bowler in a tight market

Top Australian batsman

Understandably enough Warner and Smith are the two favourites here at 3/1 and 7/2 respectively as experienced international players batting in the top three of the order ahead of Burns (7/2) Bailey (4/1) and Maxwell (5/1)

Top Australian bowler

Mitchell Starc is one the leading white ball bowlers in world cricket, adept at both swinging the ball and late innings yorkers and he is deservedly clear favourite here at 11/4 ahead of the rest of the field at 7/2 and upwards including Pattinson, Coulter-Nile and Cummins. Pat Cummins was unlucky not to play in the final test at the Oval and could be the value alternative to Starc in this market.
