Selection: Elina Svitolina

Best Odds: 1.62 @ Pinnacle

Elina Svitolina, the world’s number twenty, has lost four of her last five matches, but she is nonetheless fancied to beat Katerina Bondarenko in the first round and we believe that shrewd punters should indeed consider backing her in that encounter. The four losses might not have been great, but they came against very solid opposition that included Magdalena Rybarikova, Casey Dellacqua, Heather Watson, and Ana Ivanovic. All four players are considerably stronger than Svitolina’s next opponent, Katerina Bondarenko, which is something the world’s number twenty will keep in mind and something that will give her enough confidence to start with.

It needs to be highlighted that Katerina Bondarenko upset both Venus Williams and Mona Barthel in Istanbul, but, at the same time, she has done nothing noteworthy since then apart from retiring from her match against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. She has had to qualify for the main draw in Stanford by beating Doyle and Martic, but that is not something that would convince us to back her in the first round against her higher-ranked compatriot. There is a very good reason for them being more than a hundred places apart from each other in the ranking list – and the reason is that Svitolina is the more talented lady. It is often said that form is temporary whereas class is permanent and we are hoping that this saying will be true in regard to this contest, in which we are going to recommend a bet on the better and the classier player.
