If you’re looking to get involved in PartyPoker’s new game “Double Hold’em”, but aren’t sure where to start, then look no further. Here is the first part of our basic strategy guide for this innovative Texas Hold’em poker variant.
The most important concept at the “Double Hold’em” table, is the idea of the “point” card. After the flop has been dealt but before the betting takes place, you must choose one of your three hole cards as “point”. This card will be used alongside the remaining cards to make two separate hands. Picking the optimal “point” card is crucial, as you are not able to change your decision. It is important to provide yourself with the widest range of options, as you will see in the following examples:
If you are a dealt a pocket pair – your “point” card must be chosen from one of the paired cards.
For example, you are dealt As-Ah-6c. Choosing the As to be “point” gives you As-Ah and As-6c. You don’t want to find yourself holding As-6c and Ah-6c, which would happen if you nominated the 6c as “point”.
If your non-paired card shares the same suit as one of the paired cards, then it is vital you choose the suited card as your “point card”, to create a possible flush draw.
For example, you are dealt As-Ah-6h. You want to ensure you are holding Ah-6h and Ah-As, rather than As-6h and As-Ah.
Ensure that you are drawing to the nuts – for example with connecting cards, let’s say you are dealt Ts-9c-8h and the flop comes 7h-6d-2c. You must nominate the 9c as “point”, to ensure that you are holding 9c-8h, which gives you an open-ended straight draw, but also to provide backup, in the form of 9c-Ts and an inside straight draw.
If you are holding a hand like Ad-9s-2d on a flop of 9c-9d-3d, it is important to make sure you give yourself both the flush draw and trips, by nominating the Ad as “point”. This gives you Ad-9s for trips with the best kicker and Ad-2d for a draw to the nut flush.
This advice may seem extremely obvious, but it is critical that you understand the importance of selecting the correct card as your “point” card. Already, plenty of players at the “Double Hold’em” tables are dropping clangers with their “point” card selection and once your card is chosen, you aren’t able to change it. Take your time.
