Dominika Cibulkova, the world’s number ten, might have done surprisingly little since her last year’s defeat in the Melbourne finals, but the return to familiar surroundings seems to have done wonders to her game.

On Monday, she managed to upset Viktoria Azarenka in a match that had everything – long rallies, good serves, and plenty of stunning shots. Most experts thought that Azarenka was a big favorite to win that contest, but she was not able to dent Cibulkova’s determination and her 2015 Australian Open run came to an end. That is hardly relevant in the context of this match – what matters is that the 25-year-old played an excellent match despite being under a lot of pressure. If she brings that game to her tomorrow’s match against Serena Williams, the world’s number one will have a lot to worry about.

It goes without saying that the American is expected to prevail and that she might even be the number one favorite for the title in Melbourne, but she is yet to play a truly convincing match against a strong player in this event and that may easily open the door for Dominika Cibulkova. Elina Svitolina won a set against her and so did Garbine Muguruza, which means that Cibulkova has nothing to be afraid of. And this won’t be the first meeting between the two either, so Cibulkova will know what to do in order to get her chances.

Taking everything into account, this does look like a match Dominika Cibulkova could win. It is not very likely, of course, but one should definitely consider backing her at odds above 5.00. Serena Williams simply isn’t invincible at the moment.
