At first glance, it definitely looks like there is yet another routine win on the cards for the hard-working Spaniard, but I actually think that this particular match-up might be a bit trickier than it looks like on the surface.

Of course, it is almost impossible to see David Ferrer losing against the Russian today. After all, he is one of the very best players when it comes to clay courts and he has been playing rather brilliantly in recent months, coming really close to capturing the title over in Miami. And, to make things even better for the Spaniard, he is one of the most consistent performers in this particular event, as he has already made it to the finals on multiple occasions in Barcelona.

However, this particular clash will probably be quite specific and that might open the door for the Russian, who is one of the least predictable players on the tour right now. On one hand, he is able to lose against players like Philipp Petzschner or James Ward and look fairly uninterested on the courts. On the other hand, he is also able to trouble the very best from time to time.

I don’t really believe that he is going to defeat David Ferrer today, but the most important thing is that the odds on the various plus handicaps look to be quite juicy, especially since David Ferrer hasn’t played for quite some time and might therefore be a bit off in his very first match in Barcelona. Therefore, the recommendation is to back the Russian to do well here in some way, although the outright win might be out of his reach at the end of the day.
