The second day of the US Open should bring plenty of interesting match-ups, with Nicolas Almagro, the world’s number fifteen, taking on the world’s number sixty-five, Denis Istomin, in his first match of the week.

There might be a fairly big gap between the two when it comes to the rankings, but there certainly isn’t a huge gap between them when it comes to their hard court skills. There can be no question about who is the better player of the two on clay courts, but the H2H record shows that Istomin has Almagro’s number in all kinds of faster conditions (the conditions in Hamburg tend to be fairly quick in comparison with other clay court events) and that should allow him to have a shot at beating the Spaniard on Tuesday.

Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to make a real case for the Uzbek based on his recent form, as he was unable to win more than two matches in the most recent events – and he even managed to fall in the very first round in plenty of them. However, Nicolas Almagro has also gone off the boil after his impressive run in Hamburg – and he was actually unable to record any wins in North America so far in this part of the season.

Combine the two things together and it should be easy to see that shrewd punters should see Denis Istomin as the ideal value bet on Tuesday. The guy hasn’t lost against Almagro so far (in fact, he is yet to drop a set against the world’s number fifteen) – and there is every chance that his good record against the Spaniard will remain standing for much longer than only one more day.
