The two semifinals in Auckland are bound to bring two very exciting encounters, but it is clear that all eyes will be on Gael Monfils, as the Frenchman will be trying to continue his comeback with a win against the defending champion, David Ferrer.

However, whether he will indeed be able to find enough to beat the Spaniard remains to be seen and very much in doubt. Of course, it is possible to see the Frenchman’s victory against Tommy Haas as a very good sign of him getting back into his best, but it is important to mention that the German has not been playing well in recent times and that the result simply has to be taken with a grain of salt.

I had some doubts about Ferrer’s chances in this tournament after seeing him in Doha, but those doubts are now gone due to his excellent performance against Lukas Lacko. The Slovak was doing his best when putting Ferrer under pressure, but the Spaniard weathered the early storm, saved all break points, and demolished him in two very easy sets. That must have given him plenty of confidence and he is now undoubtedly the favourite for the title, which would obviously give him yet another nice boost before the Australian Open.

The H2H record is led by Monfils, but all three matches were played under very different circumstances and I do not believe that Frenchman will be able to defeat Ferrer today. In fact, I think that he is going to be soundly beaten by the world’s number five, so a small bet on the 2-0 looks like a good choice here.
