Lauren Davis is currently a bit higher on the ranking list and that is probably the number one reason for her being the favourite in that contest, but a closer look at the match-up actually reveals that it is quite hard to predict who is going to win this battle.

Coco Vandeweghe will certainly be on a high after her victory against the world’s number fourteen, Marion Bartoli. That victory has to be taken with a grain of salt, as Bartoli has been struggling for quite some time now, but it nevertheless shows that Vandeweghe enjoys the conditions in Monterrey. The fact that the courts are quite fast certainly suits her game, which is mainly about decent serves and powerful hitting.

Meanwhile, Lauren Davies has managed to get past Olga Poutchkova, with the Russian retiring after losing the first set 2-6. That performance tells us virtually nothing about her current form, although it seems that she is playing well right now, as she defeated Madison Keys in Miami and that certainly has to count for something.

Nevertheless, it is hard to see why Davies should be such a decent favourite in this particular battle. Yes, she is playing well right now – but so is Vandeweghe. There certainly isn’t a lot between the two in terms of quality, so this contest might be decided by just a few small details – and one simply has to like Vandeweghe’s chances after her first round performance. For that reason, the recommendation is to back her for the victory at this kind of odds.
