In an exciting race in Bahrain Ferrari had superior pace on Mercedes, only for LeClerc to be robbed of a maiden Grand Prix victory by engine problems. The third race of the season is in Shanghai next weekend
New Ferrari driver Charles LeClerc dominated free practice and qualified on pole in Bahrain and was leading comfortably two thirds of the way through the race when the MGUK failed leaving him significantly down on power, and handing another victory to Mercedes this time Lewis Hamilton.
Ferrari’s pace was a reversal of the superiority Mercedes showed in Melbourne yetafter two races Bottas leads Hamilton by a point in the drivers Championship.
At Shanghai next weekend the F1 teams return to a track where Mwercedes have won four of the last five races and Red Bull won last year. It features a 1.4km long flat out straight and the circuit is hard on the brakes. Whilst the path of this season will be determined by the teams relative rate of upgrades, it appears likely that Ferrari will have a pace advantage here as at Bahrain now they have resolved their difficulties experienced at Melbourne.
This is reflected in the outright odds for the race:
LeClerc and Vettel 15/8 joint favourites
What was notable at Bahrain was LeClerc’s pace relative to Vettel, and Vettel once again made an in race mistake when overtaken by Hamilton. LeClerc at 15/8 in Shanghai looks a solid bet indeed with BetVictor
