Some of the biggest stars of women’s tennis, including Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki, will be in action and there is no doubt that both of them will attract plenty of attention. The world’s number one will be fighting against Mallory Burdette, while Caroline Wozniacki will be trying to beat the world’s number sixty-three, Stefanie Vogele.

It certainly isn’t going to be an easy match for her, as Vogele managed to produce a stunning comeback against Julia Goerges yesterday, beating the German 3-6 6-1 6-3. That has to count form something, but Wozniacki will be a huge step up in terms of quality and it is hard to fancy Vogele’s chances today.

The courts aren’t as slow as regular clay courts, but they are nevertheless slow enough for Wozniacki to get into plenty of longer rallies – and she should be able to dominate in that department, as Vogele isn’t the most consistent player around. That wouldn’t have to be a huge issue, but the problem is that she doesn’t have enough firepower to hit through Wozniacki, so she will have to stay back during most of the rallies and it is hard to see her out-playing the world’s number ten from the back of the court.

Therefore, backing Wozniacki to cover the handicap line, which has been set at just 4.5 games by the bookmakers, looks like the right idea here. After all, she likes the conditions in Charleston – and she should like this particular match-up as well.
