WSOP Event #19 – $2,500 Six Handed Fixed Limit Hold’em
Darren Woods outlasted 354 participants in WSOP Event #19, to claim a third bracelet for the British contingent at the 2011 World Series of Poker.
The final day of the tournament saw 12 players return, with an interesting mixture of characters and styles; Matt Matros the WSOP bracelet holder, Richard “nutsinho” Lyndaker the online prodigy and Kim Nguyen, just the third woman to reach a final table at the 2011 World Series of Poker.
Woods and Nguyen eventually found themselves heads up, with Nguyen holding a chip lead. No woman has won a World Series bracelet since 2008, when Vanessa Selbst was victorious in the $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha tournament, so the room was understandably excited, but Woods would eventually prove a party pooper.
He grabbed the momentum early and soon took the chip lead, which he never relinquished. After around ninety minutes of poker the title was his, courtesy of a spiked set on the river, after Nguyen had flopped top pair and Woods bottom pair.
Woods, who picks up $213,431 for his efforts as well as the gold WSOP bracelet, said of his victory: “It’s what every poker player wants to win. The money is great as well but winning the bracelet is something else entirely.”
The 26 year old former accountant added: “I came here to win a bracelet. Now my goal is to win two.”
