The second round of the men’s tournament in Casablanca is going to see, among others, Stanislas Wawrinka opening his campaign with a match against Blaz Kavcic, who has already had an opportunity to play on the centre court.

The Swiss number two has already won this particular event on one occasion, beating Victor Hanescu in the finals back in 2010, and there is no doubt that he has set some big targets for himself before the start of this year’s European clay court swing.

However, the tournament in Casablanca is a relatively unimportant stop on the way and one has to question Wawrinka’s motivations here. He is defending no points from last year and we all know that players like Wawrinka can sometimes lose concentration in such situations, especially when it comes to the early rounds of these smaller tournaments.

On the other hand, Blaz Kavcic, the world’s number eighty-five, is surely seeing this tournament as a big opportunity to get some much-needed ranking points. He has already had a chance to play on the centre court, defeating one of the local hopes without any real difficulties, so he will be able to come out swinging and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him catching Wawrinka off-guard at the start of the match.

Kavcic is well-known for his willingness to fight against the big names (just remember his performances against the likes of Marcos Baghdatis and Marin Cilic in Zagreb this year), so there is no doubt that he is going to give this a good go today. And a determined performance might easily be enough for a set against the Swiss, who hasn’t played a competitive match for more than a month.
