The higher-ranked player, Richard Gasquet, is obviously the favourite to win the trophy, but it would not be that surprising to see Benoit Paire upsetting the odds and winning instead here in all honesty. The reason for that is that he has been playing excellent tennis throughout the week, showing that he is finally ready to make the big step out of the shadows and into the spotlight.

There was one thing that was preventing him from making that step – his attitude. In previous tournaments, Paire simply couldn’t stay focused for long and usually started to make horrible errors that allowed his opponents to defeat him. Well, that obstacle seems to be gone now, as he showed plenty of focus and resilience in Montpellier, coming back from being one set down against Llodra yesterday and staying cool against Gilles Simon the day before.

Richard Gasquet was pretty good against Benneteau, but his level of play was not that great in his other matches and that makes one wonder about his chances in this final. He is an experienced guy and he has been at this stage before, but his game can be fairly predictable at times and Paire might be able to take advantage of that with his aggressive gameplay and well-disguised drop shots. He is not the favourite, of course, but the price looks worth taking in what should be a fairly close match with plenty of momentum swings.
