Bayern Munich have travelled pretty well in Europe and got better as the tournament has progressed. An early shock at BATE Borisov in the group stage remains the only defeat, and wins versus Arsenal and Juventus on their own patches in the knockout phase illustrate the German side’s ability to win on the road. Their domestic title is all wrapped up, so the focus is solely on this fixture. The only question mark over Bayern concerns the last time they appeared to have a tie sealed after the first leg – the 3-1 win in London versus Arsenal was followed by a very nervy 2-0 home defeat, where they were caught between holding on to what they had, and going forward and winning the tie. Any such indecision in Barcelona and it could be a trickier night than is widely expected.
Barcelona were beaten in every department in the first leg, but their home form remains good, with three wins and two draws in this years Champions League at the Camp Nou. No side have overturned a 4-0 deficit in the history of the competition, but Barca have been the benchmark in European football and may not surrender meekly. The real concern for them however, will be how comprehensively they were beaten in Germany. Despite bossing possession, chances were few and far between, and the home fans will be hoping Messi is fitter than he appeared in the first leg.
