AZ Alkmaar won the cup last season but finished outside the places eligible for the European competition, which makes the Super Cup clash with Ajax the highlight of the year. They will travel to Amsterdam to defend their chances, on a stadium that brings back few pleasant memories.
Bet: AZ Alkmaar +1.5 goals
Odds: Pinnacle Sports 1.74
AZ Alkmaar began a campaign of friendly games immediately after the regular season and playoffs concluded, and lost the first match against Go Ahead Eagles. The team quickly rebounded and won the next four games scoring 23 goals and conceding just one, albeit most of their opponents were mediocre ones at best. This is the first serious match this summer and luckily for Alkmaar they don’t have any fitness concerns and can field the best starting formation with Marcellis being the only absentee.
Ajax Amsterdam has the advantage of playing the game in the nation’s capital and will have most of its fans watching and cheering for them at the Amsterdam Arena. Injuries-wise they will be without defender Veltman and midfielder Schone, but none of them are essential players in their rotation. They are undefeated in almost 6 months, but the last team to beat them was AZ Alkmaar, with the visitors scoring all three goals in the last 20 min. Once again, they will encounter a highly motivated opponent and coach DeBoer will field a starting formation featuring just to strikers and five midfielders.
This is the last important game for AZ Alkmaar before the regular season kicks-off, with no prospect of playing in a European competition in 2013. Ajax Amsterdam has the first chance to prevail but odds of 1.74 with Pinnacle Sports for Alkmaar not to lose by two goals or more are terrific.
