The first Grand Slam of the year starts on Monday and the men’s half of the tournament will be packed with the biggest stars of the game, including Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, and Roger Federer
Event: Australian Open 2013
Selection: Who will last longer? Tomas Berdych (vs. Juan Martin del Potro)
Best Odds: 2.07 @ Pinnacle
It is hard to pick the favourite from those three names, however, as all three look very strong these days. Not much is known about Roger Federer right now, but one can be pretty sure about him being fully ready, even though we haven’t seen him in action yet. The bet that looks the most interesting for me is the H2H match-up between Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin del Potro. Both guys seem to be struggling with form a little bit these days, but I just have to side with the Czech number one due to his incredibly easy draw.
In the first round, the Czech is set to meet Michael Russell, who should be no match for him. Later on, it will probably be Julian Reister, Jurgen Melzer, and Fernando Verdasco. That is the worst possible route for him – yes, the draw has really been quite nice to him. Meanwhile, the Argentinian will most likely have to face the likes of Aljaz Bedene, Marcel Granollers, and Marin Cilic. That is not that hard either, but it is nevertheless a bit tougher than the first route I’ve mentioned.
It wouldn’t be surprising to see both guys losing in the quarterfinals and this bet being a push, but I would say that del Potro has the tougher route of the two early on and I wouldn’t be shocked by seeing him lose earlier than the Czech. Therefore, I wouldn’t have him as the favourite in this particular match-up.
