The men’s tournament in Beijing is going to see the return of Rafael Nadal, who hasn’t played a serious match since his defeat against Nick Kyrgios in Wimbledon, but does anyone really believe that he will return with a tournament victory? With the line-up being full of stars, we certainly don’t.

Roger Federer is among the notable absentees, as he doesn’t really want to play in these slightly smaller events anymore by the looks of things, but Novak Djokovic, the world’s number one, will be present and he is indeed the main favorite for the title despite all those failures during the US Open Series. We would love to back him at a decent price, but the bad news is that it is impossible to get anything well above the evens mark, which makes backing the Serb a bad proposition from the value point of view.

Who’s caught our eyes, then? Marin Cilic, the winner of the final Grand Slam of the season, did. It’s naturally possible that the Croat will now drop down a little bit after such a big triumph, but there’s also a good chance that he won’t and we’ll be trying to bank on that. Winning tends to become a habit and the break between the US Open and the tournament in Beijing was long enough for Cilic to recover and clear his head from the celebrations that followed, so we believe that he’s going to be in top shape once again next week. He will have to beat some very strong players in order to capture the trophy in China, but he’s got enough equality to do so and he’s done well in Beijing in the past, so he’ll be our value play in that event next week.
