The main part of the second round of the women’s event in Toronto is not going to be on until Wednesday, but the schedule is going to allow Angelique Kerber and Dominika Cibulkova to play for a place in the third round before anyone else gets a chance to do so.

Judging by the stats and everything, the clash between the world’s number nine and the world’s number twenty might turn out to be a very interesting affair, but it seems that the bookies aren’t really able to say who deserves to be the favourite in the match-up. On one hand, the German is probably the better player of the two and the rankings reflect that pretty accurately, but, on the other hand, it is Cibulkova who leads the H2H record between the two.

However, if there is anything that should play into the hands of Kerber, it is the possibility of Cibulkova not being anywhere near her standard right now. She won the title Stanford and you could find plenty of excuses for her loss against Ana Ivanovic, but she was fairly dreadful in her first round encounter against her compatriot, Jana Cepelova, and will need to step up to the plate in order to even have a chance against Kerber.

The German failed to defeat Magdalena Rybarikova last week, but the surface in Toronto should favour her much more, as she is going to get enough time for setting up her bigger shots, which have always been her most dangerous weapons. It is naturally still going to be a big challenge for her, but there are plenty of factors that speak in her favour and she should therefore probably be a bigger favourite than the bookies currently believe.
