Friday is going to be a bit scarce in terms of big matches in Melbourne, but the one singles match that is on schedule should indeed be one of the biggest matches we have seen so far in this season. Andy Murray has cruised through to the semifinal without even dropping a set, while Roger Federer has dropped just two sets on his way to this stage of the tournament.

Matches between the two have always been very dramatic affairs, with Roger Federer usually winning in the biggest events and Andy Murray often prevailing in less important tournaments. That trend, however, has changed slightly last year with the win that the Scot recorded in the final match of the Olympic Games in London.

Even though I am a big fan of the Swiss number one, I feel that this match should be on Murray’s racket for a couple of reasons. First of all, he seems to be on the rise these days, while Federer’s best days are probably already gone. He is still going to be a level above almost everyone else for quite a while, but Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic are slowly asserting their dominance in the world of men’s tennis and I am not sure that Federer will be able to keep up with them for much longer.

The main reason for him being the favourite, however, is the fact that the conditions in Melbourne are rather slow and that allows his defensive style to prevail over Federer’s offensive tennis. And that fact is even more true later on in the day, which is when this match is going to be played. Therefore, I think that it might be worth backing the Scot to prevail in this particular clash.
