The fourth rubber of the clash between Kazakhstan and Austria will see Andrey Golubev, who managed to beat Andreas Haider-Maurer in the very first rubber of the tie, trying to seal the deal against Jurgen Melzer.

The Austrian is coming into the match as a solid favourite, but it might be a good idea to ask what is hidden behind that favoritism. And, after a closer look, it becomes obvious that the answer to that is that there really is not much behind that.

Of course, you could argue that the Austrian number one is the better player of the two overall and, given how poor Golubev was in recent years, that is certainly true. However, what you can often see in the Davis Cup is that the less-fancied players are able to produce great performances in home conditions and I do fancy Golubev to do exactly that today.

Furthermore, Jurgen Melzer was playing really bad tennis on Friday, completely self-destructing after he lost the first set from a dominant position. I guess that he has already recovered from that defeat, but I nevertheless think that his head might not be in the right place right now. He has not been at his very best for quite some time now and it does not seem likely that he will recover over in Kazakhstan.

Given everything, you simply have to like Golubev’s chances in this match. He is a much better player than the rankings suggest and he should see this as a brilliant chance to get back on track in front of his fans. And the odds are quite good as well.
