Today saw the announcement of the official 2012 John Smith’s Grand National weights, which saw Lexus Chase winner Synchronised given top weight of 11st 10lb. Long time antepost favourite Junior remains the jolly after being allocated 11st 2lbs, at a best price of 15.00 (Ladbrokes, Paddy Power).

Coral reacted to the announcement of the Grand National weights by clipping Junior from 15.00 to 13.00, and spokesperson David Stevens said, “Not many horses win at both Royal Ascot and the Cheltenham Festival, but Junior has achieved that feat, and the early betting suggests he could complete an historic treble with victory in the most famous race of all.”

Synchronised was eased from a best price of 17.00 to 23.00 (Stan James) after being allocated top weight of 11st 10lb, but trainer Jonjo O’Neill said, “Synchronised has been given a fair chance by the handicapper”, adding that the horse was in “good form”.

Last year’s winner Ballabriggs has been allocated a hefty 11st 9lb, but despite that remains the second favourite for the 2012 Grand National at a best price of 17.00 (widely available), while the other former National winner in the field is Mon Mome, who carried home 11st in 2009 and has been allocated 10st 8lb this time around. The Venetia Williams trained mount can be backed at 41.00 (Stan James).
