John Juanda, who is arguably the best non Hold’em poker player in the world right now, currently sits fourth after his demolition job in the 2-7 Draw Lowball Championship event, plus his 6th place finish in the Eight Game event.

Jason Mercier moves up to 7th in the WSOP Player of the Year standings after his recent Pot Limit Omaha victory, but Mercier has also cashed in two other events at the 2011 WSOP – the Seven Card Stud Championship (14th) and the Omaha Hi Lo Championship (27th).

Jake Cody, who completed poker’s triple crown when claiming his first WSOP title back in event number two (the Heads Up No Limit Hold’em Championship) is Britain’s highest representative on the 2011 WSOP Player of the Year leader board.

Heads Up Strategy
In order to become a more successful poker player in the long term, particularly if you play a lot of single table tournaments, it is important to master the art of Heads Up play. Turning those second place finishes into victories can make a significant difference to your bankroll.

The Gap Concept
Introduced by professional poker player and author David Sklansky in his book “Tournament Poker For Advanced Players”, the “Gap Concept” is an important principle to understand in order to improve as a poker player, particularly in tournaments.

Poker Patter 1
The language of the poker table can be thoroughly confusing. Full of jumbled jargon and vexing verbs, poker terms can leave a newcomer feeling flummoxed. Ridiculous nicknames for hands and strange, technical terminology can leave a beginner baffled. If you’re dipping your toe into the poker pond for the first time, cast a glance at our series on “Poker Patter”, the first of which covers some of the more basic, but still vitally important, poker terminology.

Picking the Right Table
On entering your favourite poker web site, where do you aim for first? Your preferred card game, a ring game with a stake limit that you are most comfortable with, a tournament with a monster jackpot or all three? Depending on what sort of player you are, the funds that you have available and the limits you have on your time, there are thousands of opportunities to explore, and thousands more games to get involved in. However, the sharpest players use a different means of selecting their tables.

Playing Short Handed Poker
There are two meanings for the term “Short handed” in poker games. The one most frequently applied, is when players are playing on a ring table comprising of only 6 players, however the phrase can also relate to the endgame in a tournament or single table Sit'n'Go, where the number of players has decreased as the competition progresses - ultimately resulting in a “Heads Up” scenario. Short handed poker is an area of the game that every poker player will experience at some stage, and should learn how best to manage to their favor.

Chip Etiquette
Any time you play with real poker chips (that is: whenever you aren’t playing poker on the Internet), you should observe proper chip etiquette. Good poker etiquette can make each hand go a little faster – which is almost always good as far as your fellow players are concerned. Another advantage to chip etiquette is that you are more likeable to other players. When you treat your chips like an experienced poker player, the other people at the table are more willing to treat you like an experienced poker player.
